"WET" in Wynwood

The non-profit organization Edgezones, which has made its home at the Worlds Arts Building in the Wynwood Art District, aims to bring undiscovered local artists to the forefront while maintaining a high level of integrity in its exhibitions.I recently attended the opening of their current exhibition entitled "WET", an enormous collaboration featuring everything from local undiscovered talents such as Gloria Lomas to very established international artists such as Edward Duval Carrie, who has had full exhibits in national museums. The WET exhibit is a result of the efforts from established local artist Charo Oquet and the long time arts activist David Vardi. I recently had a chance to speak to Charo Oquet, one of the curators behind Edgezones. As a local artist, she's been involved in the art scene in Miami since 1989. Over the years however, Charo has also been active in helping the community by involving herself in several non-profit youth based art programs. For example from 93-95, she was founder and director of the Children's Art Summer Camp at the South Fla. Arts Center. In our conversation, Charo was very passionate about the multifaceted missions Edgezones is striving to achieve. She explained that one of the main goals is to expose Miami artists abroad, as well as to expose the local Miami art scene to the works of international artists by inviting them to display their art in the exhibits held at the Worlds Arts Building in Wynwood. Another goal of Edgezones, is to capture a lasting interest of Miami's youths by exposing them the local art scene. At the recent opening of the last exhibit, Edgezones had a rock group from nautilus middle perform in order to draw the younger crowd. Edgezones is also a tool for those undiscovered local artist who are seeking a means of exposure. The organization and their regular exhibits provide an opportunity by dedicating free space for undiscovered artists in the genre of innovative contemporary art. Open appointments are available once a week by Charo, for the review and consideration of artists with solid portfolios who are serious about obtaining gallery space at an Edgezones exhibition. But don't worry if you're a talented artist but not quite there yet, Charo will make sure to network you to other local galleries for exhibition. So, if you find yourself in the mood to absorb some of Miami's choice culture, go check out WET, the current exhibition on display at the World Arts Building, located on 22nd Street and N. Miami Ave. The exhibit is excellent and the gallery, which is more like a museum, is free and open to the public from noon to 5pm every Saturday.
