A Public Space

For those interested in literary magazines, I have some good news. A new publication titled, "A Public Space" will be in circulation for the public later this year. The new magazine is catching a lot of buzz specifically for two reasons. First of all the chief editor is Brigid Hughes from "The Paris Review", and secondly because the focus of "A Public Space" will be on the two art forms no longer in fashion, fiction and poetry.Following a format very similar to The Paris Review, A Public Space will be issued quarterly and will emphasize fiction and poetry works by both famous well known authors as well as complete unknowns. In a recent interview, Hughes said that she wants the magazine to be a place where writers can publish works that encompass their vision, not the editors'.Hughes, who currently lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., has chosen to publish "A Public Space" in the USA, and base the corporate headquarters offices in Brooklyn. Supporting Hughes in her efforts is Richard Powers and Yiyun Li, who will act as contributing editors. Hughes also plans to pull a Jerry Maguire at the Paris Review and find a few staffers who will be willing to go with her. A New York state native, Hughes graduated with an English degree from Northwestern University, and shortly thereafter joined The Paris Review as an intern. While working at the Paris Review for the well known chief editor George Plimpton, Hughes says she learned quite a bit, and shares her education in the following quote, "Dewars is a fine brand of scotch, how to make a trick pool shot, and why editing a literary magazine is the best job in the world."With support from publishers and the film community, Hughes plans to find the financial support needed to publish the magazine from the private donors, grants, subscription revenue, and advertising. An annual subscription will cost $30, while a single issue will run about $10-12.
