With the recent developments in the Dave Chappelle saga, the comedian has truly reinforced the popular stereotype that art is an imitation of life. And although I wasn't there to witness the kind of carousals that led to Dave recently checking himself into a "clinic" in South Africa there is a certain irony between the alleged drug problem rumors and the popular Tyrone Biggums skits that boast of 250,000.00 dollar crack parties featured on the Chappelle show. After missing for a couple weeks and ending up on the back of several milk cartons, Entertainment Weekly reported earlier this week that Chappelle had checked himself into a clinic somewhere in Africa. At this point both Comedy Central and Chappelle's P.R. people are not disclosing any details. However, after the recent news and the second postponement of the third season, rumors were spreading that the nature of the problem could be drug related. A few months ago, after signing a 50 million dollar contract with comedy central for the third and fourth seasons, Chappelle was reportedly seeking alternative contract offers from other networks after being cut out of DVD sales of more than 2 million copies from first-season. Although these reports were never confirmed, Chappelle's reasons for the recent disappearance and the missing of two production deadlines for the new season's filming remain a mystery. In the event that the rumors are true and Chappelle in fact is in a clinic in South Africa for drug rehab, I hope he gets out soon. I'm looking forward to the next season, which I'm sure will have plenty of new side splitting material based on Chappelle's dramatic escapades. To express my final thought on this matter, I'd like to end with a quote from the Rick James episode, "They should've never gave you N-words money!" |
