Viernes Culturales

On May 27th, the last Friday of the month, a cultural event unique to Miami will be taking place on the streets of Little Havana. For those unfamiliar with it, it's known as Viernes Culturales or Cultural Fridays in English.

Viernes Culturales can be described best as something between an enormous street party and an arts festival. The event takes place on the last Friday of every month, and usually receives by a warm reception from the large Latin community in Miami. If you've never taken part, it's quite a unique insight to Latin culture through music and art. There are typically thousands in attendance throughout the night.

Starting around 7pm, and running until the locals see fit that the party has ended, Viernes Culturales takes place on Eighth Street between 14th and 17th avenue. Finding available parking on Eighth Street is always an experience of its own. No worries though, the locals in the surrounding neighborhood are usually cool with letting you park on their front lawn.

The fun really begins when you hit the street. There you will encounter swarms of bodies, and myriads of art vendors. Don't take this negatively though, the art being sold on the street is typically very good and cheap, and the bodies are usually moving along to the rhythms of street performers in a pleasantly drunken state. Another couple of perks to the event, is that it's free of charge and there's always a plentiful supply of Arroz con Pollo and live Latin music to indulge in.

This Friday if you find yourself in the mood for venturing into the city, go check out Viernes Culturales. If you've never been, it's definitely an interesting experience that has a whole lot of Miami culture to offer.
