Before it was all right for rappers to do sprite commercials and before Rap music turned into pop anthems, there was a select few known as "Lyricists." They were poets and present-day philosophers, and more importantly, their words beseeched the listener's psyche to go further. Among those who lead the forefront were the Digable Planets.
Although the planets haven't officially released an album together in over ten years, they still hold a special place at the pulpit of the true Hip-Hop heads congregation. Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) and Blowout Comb are both testaments to the true standard of complex Hip-Hop found in the 1990's.
As part of the 25 city Rap concert revival A.K.A. "Rebirth of Cool Reunion Tour," Craig "Doodlebug" Irving, Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler and Mary Ann "Ladybug" Viera will be performing on Sunday Jul. 3, at the I/O Lounge in Miami, Fl. The Digable Planets will be accompanied by a full live band, and guests Mayday, Sevenstar, Soulwhat?, and Haviken Hayes. Performing on the outdoor garden patio will be Los Four Amigos, Dublex, Lumin, and Kems.
Doors open at 9pm, and tickets are $20.00 at the door. You can purchase tickets in advance for $15.00 online at epoplife.com, or in person at Uncle Sam's Records in South Beach.
The show should be the shiz-nickel-skitly-snip-snap, but go check it out for yourself. I'll try to make it if I can, and follow up with all the details. See you there, hopefully. |
