In the heart of Washington D.C. stands a 24 Ft. tall panel of glass, displaying the names of those dedicated journalists who have given their lives while serving the public.
Known as The Freedom Forum Journalists Memorial, the monument commemorates reporters, editors, photographers, and broadcasters from all over the world who have died in the line of duty. There are currently 1,528 names onsite, but every single year the memorial is rededicated on "World Press Freedom Day" to include the names of those journalists who passed during the previous year. Over the years, the dedication speech has drawn some of the most respected and well known journalists in the world including Helen Thomas and Tom Brokaw.
On May 3, 2005, CNN Senior Correspondent Judy Woodruff gave the dedication speech and read the names of the 78 journalists whose names were added to the memorial for 2004. Marked for its infamy, 2004 went down in history as the third worst year since 1812. The list included journalists form over 19 countries, 25 died in Iraq, and 9 in the Philippines.
Some of the other journalists remembered in the memorial include Veronica Guerin who was murdered in Dublin in 1996 after exposing an organized crime syndicate. Also remembered is Elijah Lovejoy who was the voice of abolitionists in America during the 1800's and on of the first martyrs for freedom of the press in the states.
The Memorial is a central feature of Freedom Park, it stands adjacent to The Freedom Forum Newseum and The Freedom Forum World Center headquarters in Arlington, VA. |
