March of the Penguins Preview

Typically, when you think of a love movie you don't think of penguins. However, french director Luc Jacquet, adds new angles to our conceptions in his new film titled "March of the Penguins."

In the spirit of the nature documentary, the film tracks the incredible mating rituals of the Antarctican native, the emperor penguin. Through unbearable conditions, it follows the unique and tender courting process of these birds over the span of an entire year.

The wooing begins each summer after the birds return from gorging themselves at sea.
From every direction, they walk several miles in single files across the frozen tundra of Antarctica converging by the hundreds upon the instinctive location of their mating grounds. Huddled in a group, while being belted by the subzero gales, they proceed to mingle and chatter in the courting process, until they find that perfect mate. They then proceed to procreate monogamously through the harsh winter and into spring. During this time, the mother lays the egg and returns to the sea for nourishment. Meanwhile, the father stays with the egg to protect it from the bitter blizzards and continuous darkness of winter, which would surely kill most other species. In spring the eggs hatch and the chick are born. Returning from the sea, the mothers reunite with their families and feed the newborns, while the starved fathers are relieved of their duties.

The extraordinary story is narrated by the decorous voice of Morgan Freeman, but the most amazing part of the film is the breathtaking photography of the emperor penguins and the Antarctic scenery.

Hailed by film critics as possibly the best documentary of the year, March of the Penguins opens nationwide this weekend at selected locations. If you happen to reside between Palm Beach and the Metro-Miami area, you are out of luck. While 90% of the theaters in this same location, which also happens to be the fourth most populated area in the continental United Sates, will be showing "Land of the Dead" and "Herbie", the powers that be have decided that March of the Penguins is not worthy of screening.
