Director/Screenwriter Hayao Miyazaki is ready to take American audiences on another amazing adventure with his newest full length Anime film "Howl's Moving Castle", which opens Friday, June 8.
Miyazaki who won an Oscar in 2001 for "Best Animated Feature" with his beautiful masterpiece "Spirited Away", has also partaken in a slew of major films in the Anime genre such as "Princess Mononoke", "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Castle in the Sky".
After nearly three years, Howl's Moving Castle is the first film Miyazaki has released since the uncanny success of Spirited Away. While Miyazaki is not the featured Director of the film, he does contribute significantly as the author of the Screenplay. Moreover, Miyazaki has once again recruited the masterful animators at "Studio Ghibli", whom animated most of Miyazaki's more popular fillms, to create Howl's Moving Castle. Miyazaki has also recruited some very illustrious Hollywood actors and actresses to contribute as the voice ins. The cast includes, Christian Bale, Jean Simmons, Lauren Bacall, and Billy Crystal.
In the film, a teenage girl named Sophie who works in a hat shop is unexpectedly surprised when a handsome and mysterious wizard named Howl suddenly sweeps her away. However, out of jealousy, the Wicked Witch of the Waste transforms her into a 90-year old woman. In an attempt to reverse the curse, Sophie embarks on a quest along with Howl and his associates Markl and Calcifer in Howl's magical moving castle.
Although the movie is geared toward a younger audience and is rated PG, it is still worth seeing on the big screen. Besides, if Miyazaki's screenwriting efforts in the film are anything like those of Spirited Away, it will be sure to win us over by appealing to the inner child in every one of us. |
