Last week in Ireland, the new single by Damien Rice & Lisa Hannigan, "Unplayed Piano" appeared at the #4 spot in the pop charts.
Despite gaining major success as the singer/songwriter-performer duo over the last couple of years, and currently being on a world tour, Damien Rice & Lisa Hannigan have made time to recently record the single "Unplayed Piano" for a noble cause.
Released on June 20, all of the proceeds will go to the "US Campaign for Burma" and "Burma Campaign UK." Unplayed Piano was actually written by Rice and Hannigan to show support to the "Free Aung San Suu Kyi 60th Birthday Campaign," as part of a global initiative to free the Burmese Nobel Peace Prize recipient on her 60th Birthday.
Rice had this to say about the efforts, "I prefer not to interfere too much with what is going on in the world, but when someone has been thrown into a hole and they ask you to throw down a rope, I am happy to look for a rope, especially for a woman of such grace."
The song and the video will be available exclusively through iTunes. However, due to the celerity of production, the download is only available in the UK.
Aung San Suu Kyi is the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient. After a nationwide uprising took place in Burma in 1988, Suu Kyi led the National League for Democracy to a national election victory in 1990. However, the tyrannical ruling dictators refused to recognize the change in power, and have kept her locked up for nearly ten years. As of June 19, Suu Kyi will have spent 9 years and 238 days in detention.
