Art News: Photography

From June 29, to October 2, the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma will be exhibiting one of the most extensive collections of Pulitzer Prize winning photographs in an exhibition titled, "Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs."

The grand opening of "Capture the Moment:" was at the NY Newseum back in the summer of 2000. Since then, the exhibit has traveled to the Arlington Newseum, and has made several stops in cities across the United States.

Featuring more than 100 photographs, the exhibition highlights six decades of the most memorable images from the winning entries each year. The display spans the evolution and history of photo journalism in the United States starting with the first year a photograph was eligible for the Pulitzer Prize award in 1941 to the present day winners.

While professionals took most of the photographs displayed in the exhibit, included are several defining American iconic images captured by average citizens witnessing phenomenal events. Amongst such historically imbedded images are Joe Rosenthal's World War II photograph of the raising of the American flag at the battle of Iwo Jima (1945), Sal Veder's picture of the welcoming of an American POW by his family (1974), and Steve Ludlum's photograph of the World Trade Center attack during 9/11 (2001).

A brief narrative explaining the circumstances leading up to the moment of the picture, as well as the award winning photographers personal history and accounts accompanies each photograph.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, including admission rates, visit the official website at http://www.washingtonhistory.org.
