Music News: Luther Vandross
R&B colossus Luther Vandross died earlier today at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison, N.J. He was 54 years old. Over the years, Vandross also struggled with weight problems, diabetes, and hypertension. According to sources, Vandross' health had been in decline for the last couple of years, and he never fully recovered from a stroke he suffered in his Manhattan home in April, 2003.
His first big hit came in 1980 as the lead vocalist for the group Change, under the title, "The Glow of Love." The success of the record led to a recording contract with Epic Records. In 1981, Vandross recorded his first solo album titled, "Never Too Much." The record became an instant classic.
During Vandross' colorful carreer, the mega artists sold more than 25 million albums world wide. He was best known for powerful ballads such as "Here and Now" and "Any Love."
After suffering his severe stroke, Vandross continued to record songs. He recorded "Dance With My Father" in 2004, which captured four Grammys later that year. At the time vandross was stricken to a wheelchair, and delivered his thank you speech over a video feed.
His loss will be a great loss to lovers of true R&B. |
