Film Capsule: In Evil Hour

Shown as part of the Miami International Film Festival, "In Evil Hour," is a cinematic masterpiece that envisions the literary mind of one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Brazilian director, Ruy Guerra, bases In Evil Hour on one of Marquez's earlier works, "La Mala Hora." Guerra encompasses all the telltale signs of a Marquez story in the film, such as a small town in South America, Mysticism, and plenty of colorful wacky characters.

I attended the presentation of this film at the Colony Theater in Miami Beach and came away truly impressed by Guerra's offering.

In the film, an endless monsoon has descended upon the rural town; a sure sign of the chaos to come. Gradually, as the film progressed, it intertwined parallel sub plots of feuding power-hungry families and passionate yet sometimes vengeful love stories along with a surrealistic timeline that seems to have a mystical order amongst the chaotic events taking place.

The acting was excellent, the direction was exceptional and the dialogue was hysterical yet dramatic. Overall, for anyone who is a fan of either international film or Gabriel Garcia Marquez, or both, In Evil Hour is definitely something worth checking out.

Although there are no further showings of the film taking place as part of the Miami International Film Festival, you may want to check out various local independent video rental stores over the next few months, as I'm sure this is a film that will make it to their shelves.
