Alligator Album Review

Although The National's third recording "Alligator" has been out for nearly a year, it inconceivably remains one of the best-uncharted albums of 2005.

Based out of Brooklyn, The National doesn't resonate with the familiar sounds of their contemporary New York based peers, such as Interpol or the Strokes. They almost have a Brit or Canadian feel, but sure enough, they're from Cincinnati.

The thing that impresses most about their album, "Alligator," is that every single track is exceptional and refreshing.

Maybe it's the incredible melodic dialogue of the guitars, or perhaps the perfect balance of upbeat light and deep reflective songs, or maybe the quirky brilliant lyrics of baritone lead singer Matt Berninger. Anyway you dissect it, every member of the quintet contributes a portion to the Vultron-like construction of Alligator, which is one of the most complete and solid albums in recent years.

Being that this is a poetry and literature based website, I think I'll focus on some of the lyrics from Alligator to give you an idea of the diversity and innovation of The National.

"I'm perfect piece of ass _Like every Californian _So tall I take over the street, with highbeams shining on my back …I'm a birthday candle in a circle of black girls _God is on my side _Cuz I'm the child bride _I'm so sorry but the motorcade will have to go around me this time _Cuz God is on my side"
Track 9: All The Wine

"I have weird memories of you _Wearing long red socks and red shoes _I have weird memories of you_ Pissing in a sink, I think __I have weird memories of you __Parking your car, you said, I'm overwhelmed _You were thinking out loud, you said, I think I'm like Tennessee Williams"
Track 12: City Middle

"You know you have a permanent piece _Of my medium-sized American heart"
Track 4: Looking for Astronauts

"I wake up without warning and go flying around the house _In my sauvignon fierce, freaking out _Take a forty-five minute shower and kiss the mirror _And
say, look at me _Baby, we'll be fine _All we gotta do is be brave and be kind"Track 6: Baby, We'll Be Fine

If you're tired of listening to those same song lists in your IPod, take a chance and look into adding The National to your collection. You have my MPR promise that their latest release, Alligator, won't let down.
