Amadou and Mariam rock their first show in Miami

In route to Coachella, International Music artists - Amadou and Merriam - recently performed in Miami as part of the Rhythm Foundation's "Transatlantic Music Feastival."

I thought their performance was definitely of mesmerizing quality. It somehow just felt like the type of music that should be listened to outdoors under natural skies.

This was the sentiment that my musical comrade Ashley and I shared as we swayed rhythmically to the sounds of Amadou and Mariam. Now don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the classy confines of the Manuel Artime Theatre in Little Havana with its red velvet curtains and cultured appeal. Unfortunately, Amadou and Mariam's brand of bluesy African rock is meant for dancing.

And that's exactly what the crowd in attendance did.

Almost immediately, the fans in attendance started to bolt from their seats and begin dancing in the aisles and right up in front of the stage. Even the more subdued members of the audience couldn't help but gyrate their hips and bob their heads to the rhythm.

"The blind couple from Mali" and their funky bandmates sang and jammed incessantly, fleshing out the African Roots rhythms that earned them consideration at both the Grammys and BBC Awards. They seemed very at home with the dance-happy South Florida audience in the first Miami performance of their 26-year career, even weaving in Spanish salutations and comments throughout the course of the show.

Mariam Amadou and Mariam first garnered commercial prominence when they agreed to have Latin jazz superstar Manu Chao produce their 2004 album Dimanche ŕ ‚amako (Sunday in Bamako). However, the two former graduates of Mali's Institute for the Young Blind having been churning out Malian Blues since the early eighties. And as far as I could see, the two are sill very much in love with one another and very much in love with the music that they make.

If you didn't get a chance to catch the show, make sure to check out one of their albums. You won't be disappointed.

Especially if you like to dance.
