Editors - Concert Review

Although the editors of many Miami publications failed to mention the show that was taking place at "Studio A" in Downtown Miami this weekend, the Editors, which played at the venue Saturday, definitely seemed to have gotten right.

Saturday night, UK rockers, "Editors" played a concert at the new live music venue in Downtown Miami, "Studio A." I had yet to visit in the month or so that the club has been in existence, but was impressed by my overall experience.

First of all, for Miamians that are fans of (indie or alt) live rock music, Studio A is promising to be the deliverer of a viable local scene. The venue charges a very modest price for admissions to its shows and is bringing legitimately recognized acts.

"Studio A's" main ballroom type dance floor is large enough to hold 400 ? 500 very comfortably. The sound is excellent; and furthermore, there are three bars and a good mix of attractive locals from all walks of life, which surprised me the most. It's good to see the varying Miami populous mingling agreeably, as opposed to the habitual night life plague that mainly keeps them divided.

After an opening band, whose name I didn't catch, and a brief intermission - the Editors took the stage. Their performance was more than I expected. The band was extremely tight and had a great stage presence. Front man, Tom Smith, was extremely charismatic and showed his skills vocally as well as on the rhythm guitar and piano. Bass player, Russell Leetch, who looked like he could be a starting lineman in NFL, showed his precision in the playing of driving bass lines. Drummer, Ed Lay, also showed extreme precision as the other part of the rhythm section, never missing a beat. As for lead guitarist, Chris Urbanowicz, his full riffs and masterful blend of guitar effects were incredible to witness in person.

At some point during the show, I remember stopping and thinking, "This is a real rock concert taking place in Miami." It was almost surreal, but this is no pipe dream folks. If you're living in Miami and any part of this article seemed to appeal to you, I suggest you go to the Studio A website (http://studioamiami.com) and check out the events page for upcoming shows of interest. As fellow musically deprived Miamians, I'm sure you'll find the experience equally rewarding.
