PBS has become synonymous with independent documentaries. So much so, that their "P.O.V" series is the longest running and top-rated documentary in the U.S.
Entering its 19th year in 2006, P.O.V. has chosen to feature the political documentary "No More Tears Sister" by Helene Klodawsky. The film takes a deep look at the influential life and tragic death of Sri Lankan human rights activist Rajani Thiranagama. The tenured professor and native daughter of Sri Lanka was assassinated in her homeland back in 1989.
Backed by the National Film Board of Canada, the independent documentary was actually released last year and drew rave reviews at several international film festivals. It will air on PBS on June 27th.
The P.O.V. series, which draws its name from a common film term for "point of view", has enjoyed tremendous critical success and relatively high TV ratings in recent years. The program has won a wide array of major film and broadcasting awards including 18 Emmys, while holding an impressive average audience of 250,000 viewers per episode. P.O.V. is also well known for its "Talk Back" segment, which occurs at the end of each documentary film and features individual viewer responses. |
