Does the sudden and apparent flipping of heroes from Will Turner to Jack Sparrow in the latest Pirates of the Caribbean installment, Dead Man's Chest, work?
Well, in the first installment of Pirates of the Caribbean, The Curse of the Black Pearl, and throughout most of the second installment, Dead Man's Chest, the plot seemed to follow its cookie-cutter formula of an action adventure love story featuring the noble-hearted Will Turner as its hero.
But now, it seems halfway through Dead Man's Chest, its creators have apparently shifted toward making Jack Sparrow the seeming hero, who'll eventually get the girl in the end, and save the day, and so forth and so on.
But does this piss-off audiences or tantalize them?
Those who prefer a consistent plot will probably be pissed off after some minor contemplation. But, for those who only want to see another installment where Johnny Depp (Captain Sparrow) is the centerpiece of the movie, the plot twist will be a coup.
Here's another subtle yet important aspect to ponder: Is Dead Man's Chest really a sequel to The Curse of the Black Pearl, or is it more of a sequel to the third, still unnamed, installment; thus, making Curse of the Black Pearl more of a prequel? The way it's currently unfolding, it seems to me that The Curse of the Black Pearl only sets up the characters, but doesn't necessarily contribute in any linear way toward the plot, so things could go either way at this point. Chances are that they'll take the conventional linear route, but you never know.
As for the movie itself, I feel crowds for the most part (or at least everyone I know) are giving the film negative buzz. However, I liked it equally as much as the first. It's just as entertaining; and in the end, that's all you can ask from a Disney movie target for the young-teen demographic.
