Stern Set to Celebrate Anniversary

For Howard Stern, the style and content are much the same. The liberal use of profanity, the disdain for authority, the willingness to play out his sexual fantasies on the air, and his love of mocking celebrities is much the same as it was when he was on the public airwaves.

The only thing different for the popular talk show host is that Stern is now free from his corporate enemies and the watchdogs at the FCC by virtue of having moved his controversial style to satellite radio. And as he moves towards the celebration of his first year anniversary with Sirius, radio's best known shock jock has helped transform Sirius into a legitimate media power.

Indeed, the controversial radio talk show host has been just what the doctored ordered for Sirius. The satellite radio company has parlayed Stern into a ten fold increase in listeners, from 600,000 when Sirius announced it had signed Stern in 2004 to more than 6 million subscribers today.

For those who have yet to tune him in on Sirius, he has continued to utilize much of his prior formula. First off, Stern's whole crew joined him at Sirius, including Robin Quivers, Fred Norris, Artie Lange, and producer Gary Dell'Abate. And there is still the vaunted ''Sybian,'' the vibrating chair he keeps in the studio for porn stars.

The humor is often juvenile and the off color nature is still troublesome to many. But Howard Stern is as popular with his loyal listeners as he ever was. As he celebrates one year with Sirius the satellite radio company has to know that shelling out $13 bucks a month better bring a listener something different than traditional radio. And without a doubt, Stern delivers just that.
