Has Eddie Murphy Finally Attained Elite Status?

He is easily one of America's most recognized television and movie personalities. But despite gobs of money and superstardom, Eddie Murphy had previously seen little in the way of critical accolades.

But in just one week's time, all of that has changed. First came Murphy's first ever Golden Globe award for his supporting role in "Dreamgirls." Still, that failed to match the luster of his recent nomination for one of the esteemed Oscar statues.

Murphy plays James Early, a singer modeled after the late James Brown. Murphy is front and center in the early parts of the top nominated movie, "Dreamgirls."

Though not part of the best picture debate, the movie received eight separate nominations. In the film, the brilliant comedian shines amidst some significant talent, Beyonce, Jamie Foxx and the brilliant new talent, Jennifer Hudson.

The star that drew audiences to the likes of "48 Hrs.", "Trading Places," "Beverly Hills Cop", "Coming to America," "Dr. Dolittle" and "The Nutty Professor" has not even been on the Oscar radar in years past. The return to top form for Murphy comes with the surprising move from lead to supporting actor. Only the modest hit "Daddy Day Care" in 2003 could be counted as worthy of mention in recent years and is contrasted against such disasters as "The Adventures of Pluto Nash," "I Spy" and "Showtime."
