As is often the case with the most highly-publicized sporting events, last week's first ever face-off between the most popular talk-show host on cable television and his satirist imitator from Comedy Central failed to match the hype.
The Fox News Channel Bill O'Reilly first hosted Stephen Colbert of "The Colbert Report", then the Comedy Central star returned the favor by hosting O'Reilly the following night. Unfortunately for those who tuned in, O'Reilly refused to play the person that has made him the most popular, conservative talk-show host on television.
"Papa Bear," as Colbert calls O'Reilly, failed to engage in his usual over-the-top combative style during the two separate exchanges. Perhaps sensing he was out of his element, O'Reilly deferred to the satirist throughout, leaving Colbert the easy winner.
Colbert portrayed his self-involved talk-show host character to perfection. Priding himself on the bringing "truthiness" to the world, Colbert satirizes O'Reilly who continuously claims his show is the epitome of "truthiness", touting his program as the "no-spin zone" each and every evening.
Though there was little top flight banter, Colbert easily took home top honors with the segment that poked at O'Reilly and his potential to win a battle of fisticuffs with fellow Fox News host, Sean Hannity. "Papa Bear" indicated Hannity would essentially take the older O'Reilly to the cleaners.
O'Reilly finished with "I'm not a tough guy. This is all an act. I'm sensitive."
To which the ever-clever Colbert responded: "If you're an act, than what am I?" |
