Oscar Snubs a Plenty

Even for the Oscar nomination process, one non-selection was particularly surprising.

Golden Globes' winner "Dreamgirls" was not even deemed worthy of a nomination by the Oscar folks. Yet, at the same time, the popular musical earned nominations for eight other Oscar categories.

After winning at the Globes, to not even receive a nomination for best picture was a major surprise. As a result, "Dreamgirls" became the first ever film to earn the most nominations without also taking home the best-picture slot.

However, the snubs did not stop there.

Brad Pitt in "Babel" and Sacha Baron Cohen in "Borat" were other noteworthy omissions. Annette Bening in "Running With Scissors" was yet another surprising slight. In addition, the much touted "The Departed" was thought to potentially take home many acting nominations. But only Mark Wahlberg received a nomination, meaning both Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson failed to make the cut.

Due to a technicality, Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto" did not qualify for the foreign-film category even though it was the year's top-grossing foreign-language film. Another surprising omission came in the non-fiction category with the "Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing" being passed over.

And finally, a poor box office result seemed to doom "Infamous." Both Toby Jones as Truman Capote and Sandra Bullock as Harper Lee fit the typical Oscar profile for award potential but neither earned a nomination.
