He still has not declared that he is running for the presidency in 2008. But continuing his push to greater awareness of global warming, Al Gore announced Thursday a daylong series of all-star concerts for July.
Dubbed Live Earth, the series is set to be modeled after 2005's Live 8 extravaganza. The 24-hour event, set for July 7th, features performances in seven separate cities over six continents. The scheduled sites are Shanghai, Sydney, Johannesburg, London and yet to be determined cities in Brazil, Japan and the United States.
The concerts are to feature more than 100 musical acts. Along with the likes of Jon Bon Jovi and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the concerts will feature the likes of Snoop Dogg, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Ethridge, John Mayer, Snow Patrol, Damien Rice, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.
Concert organizers hope to broadcast to more than 2 billion people. The artists are expected to be donating their time to support the green living concept that seeks to combat global warming.
Gore was recently nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for his work related to global warming. His movie, the Oscar-nominated documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," focuses in on the greenhouse gas issue that is seen as a basis for the current warming of the planet.
Money raised from the various concerts will help support the SOS Campaign, the Save Our Selves Campaign for a Climate in Crisis. The only remaining question is whether Gore will seek to use this as a catalyst for another presidential run. |
