Hugh Grant, know for his comedic roles in a variety of love stories has turned to music for his latest movie part. The gifted actor stars in the role as a has-been pop rocker in "Music & Lyrics."
Grant reportedly listened to CD hits from the 1980's to get a feel for the music of the time. He later met with Martin Fry of the band ABC to learn more about what it meant to be a musician during that era. For Grant, admittedly without knowledge and feel for the music industry, it was key preparation for his role.
Grant plays Alex Fletcher, the unknown member of a 80' s pop band, reduced to singing and playing at high school reunions and theme parks. Fletcher tries to maintain some sense of pride - he says no to a Battle of the 80's Has Beens, a show featuring musicians slugging it out in a boxing ring for the right to perform.
The story line features Grant writing a song for a young female icon (can anyone say Britney Spears or Christine Aguilera) named Cora (played by Haley Bennett). Though Grant can compose music, he is weak as a lyricist.
Enter the character played by Drew Barrymore, hired to water Fletcher's plants. The musician finds Barrymore is a natural born lyricist. The result is a funny collaboration that features Grant excelling with his warm and charming personality.
The two hit their acting strides in a film that is sure to appeal to audiences that loved "Notting Hill" or "Four Weddings and a Funeral." |
