The National Aeronautics and Space Administration announced today that it will review the screening process for spaceflight candidates. In addition, the agency will also examine whether or not ongoing review procedures should exist for astronauts during their aerospace careers.

The change, ordered by NASA Administrator Michael Griffin, came one day after shuttle astronaut Lisa Nowak was charged with attempted murder. Orlando police revealed an extraordinary tale when leveling the charges against the 43-year-old Novak.

Police indicated that Nowak had driven nearly 900 miles to kidnap and kill a woman apparently seeking the affection of another astronaut. Novak reportedly wore diapers on the lengthy trip to minimize bathroom stops.

The astronaut was arrested at Orlando International Airport after she allegedly tired to kidnap Colleen Shipman using pepper spray in the process. Novak was arrested with a vast set of unique materials including a steel mallet and a hunting knife. Shipman was believed to be a Novak rival for the affection of Bill Oefelin, yet another NASA astronaut.

Space agency officials noted that astronauts receive psychological evaluations when they apply for the space program. However, once in the NASA group, astronauts are not tested further unless a crew member seeks such an examination.

Beyond the testing issue, NASA will need to make a determination regarding Nowak's future flight status, should she be cleared of criminal wrong doing. Also still at issue is the fate of Oefelin - many former NASA officials indicate both he and Novak have flown their last mission.

A graduate of the Naval Academy in 1985, Novak flew her first space mission in July. Other NASA officials noted that such a flight can lead to a severe let down emotionally after an astronaut returns and has to go through the lengthy wait process for another potential mission.

Nowak recently separated from her husband. The couple has three children.
