He is an outstanding singer, so good that he has already sung backup for the likes of Justin Timberlake, Usher and Christine Aguilera. But when you forget the lyrics in the midst of a contest like American Idol, you understand that you do not deserve to make the cut.
Such was the case for Brandon Rogers, the 29-year-old who has already toured with the aforementioned talent. The North Hollywood, California singer became the first ever Idolist finalist to completely forget the words to his song.
The stylish singer was in the midst of doing a little dancing while delivering the Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love" when he lost track of where he was. He acknowledged that he was listening too much to the crowd and enjoying the people as they were screaming in response to his little "hip-shimmy." Rogers stated to MTV that the screams had him thinking, "This is awesome!" before his mind went blank and he paused, this time thinking, "What the heck are my words?"
Rogers said he knew that his ouster was coming and felt at peace with the American Idol voter's decision. Rogers told MTV, "I messed up my words and I hadn't created enough momentum, musically, to sustain a mistake like that."
Rogers also stated that having worked as a background singer professionally had its disadvantages. The expectations from others were significant, noted Rogers, who also stated that those same people had specific expectations about how he would sound before he even opened his mouth to sing.
The singer also noted that he wasn't sure if Idol was a singing or a popularity contest. Instead he took heart in making it to the top 12.
"I'm hoping I can use it to help kick-start my career in music, which is what I've always wanted to do," said Rogers. |
