After 66 Great Years, Captain America Meets his Demise

Marvel's "Captain America #25," on sale Wednesday, features the demise of longtime superhero, Captain America.

Actually it is Steve Rogers, the Captain's undercover, alter ego, that is shot by a sniper. Rogers was on his way to a courthouse when he was shot, suffering multiple wounds to the shoulder, chest and stomach.

For Rogers, it was not his first brush with death. In 1945, Rogers was thought to have been the victim of a bomb blast and was blown to pieces. Instead, he plunged into the ocean where he was merely frozen in suspended animation. A supergroup of superheroes known as the Avengers managed to thaw him out in the 1960's.

The end for Captain America comes when the Marvel comic star, first introduced in 1941, is no longer selling. However, true to form, Marvel publisher Dan Buckley, announced to the faithful that it was only Captain America's secret identity that had been hit.

Buckley announced that Rogers was a goner yes, but not necessarily Captain America. In a classic tease, the publisher stated that "Captain America is a costume, and there are other people who could take it over."

Though Marvel comics will continue a storyline that has Rogers dead, an upcoming movie to be written by Screenwriter David Self will feature the superhero. In fact, the Marvel plans are for a ten part series with Robert Downey Jr. to star.

I believe Robert Downey Jr. is slated to play Iron Man, not Captain America.
