One of Comedy Central's Top 100 Comedians of All Time, Richard Jeni took his own life Saturday. The stand up comedian was found alive initially though mortally wounded from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Sources reported a loaded gun was found next to his body.
According to police, they found the comedian at his own apartment in West Hollywood after responding to a call at approximately 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning from Jeni's girlfriend. Entertainment Tonight reported she was in the process of making Jeni breakfast when the comedian went into the shower and shot himself in the face.
Jeni was a regular on the "The Tonight Show" and in 2004 earned the number 57 ranking on Comedy Central's Top stand up comedian list of all time. Jeni's website claimed he had been "The Tonight Show's" most frequent guest. The comedian also appeared in the film "The Mask" playing the role of Jim Carrey's best friend.
Jeni, also a regular at Hollywood's Laugh Factory, appeared in several other films including The Aristocrats, Burn, Hollywood, Burn and National Lampoon's Dad's Week Off . The comedian was a close friend of Chris Rock and wrote some of the material Rock used at the 2005 Oscars.
Jeni was pronounced dead at 10:36 a.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. An autopsy has been scheduled though foul play is not being considered. |
