Idaho Sen. Larry Craig called a press conference Tuesday to announce that the he had made a mistake in judgment when he recently pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge in Minneapolis. The Senator had initially been charged with lewd conduct after an episode in which Craig made a sexual overtures to an undercover officer in an airport restroom. Craig alleges he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge in hopes of keeping the issue quiet.
Commentary: At one of the most bizarre press conferences in recent memory, Craig stated he had done nothing wrong despite his guilty plea. The senator insisted an Idaho paper had clouded his judgment by hounding him about alleged sexual acts with other men. Another of the Republicans against gay marriages, Craig also took time during his press conference to ensure the citizens of Idaho that he was not gay and never had been. Gay or not, within the matter of a few days we suspect he will not be a senator any more.
