A Late Honor for Roy Orbison

Permalink | Comments (0) | RSS

In a page out of the absurd, a new species of beetle has been dubbed Orectochilus orbisonorum in honor of the late Roy Orbison. The Latinesque-name was given to the new species because the insect appears to be wearing a tuxedo.

Commentary: Adding to the unusual aspect of the naming process was the public unveiling. Entomologist Quentin Wheeler announced the naming of the beetle during a Roy Orbison Tribute Concert on Jan. 25. It should be noted that the final aspect of the name, the "orum," indicates that it was named after both Roy and his wife Barbara collectively. Mr. Orbison responded to the announcement with amazing understatement, offering "I have never seen an honor like that."
