While doping in baseball has taken center stage the last few weeks, the sports world learned today that tennis star Martina Hingis has been given a two-year ban from the sport after testing positive for cocaine. The International Tennis Federation announced that the Swiss must also forfeit $130,000 in prize money and the ranking points she earned at Wimbledon last year as well as the points she won in all subsequent events.
Commentary: The 27-year-old tested positive for cocaine while she was competing at Wimbledon last spring. Hingis has called the positive tests monstrous, horrendous and downright false. However, an independent anti-doping tribunal has verified the accuracy of the results. The federation imposed the ban beginning October 1, 2007 though the five-time has announced her retirement from the sport due to the allegations. |
